TOUR IN MYCENAE /EPIDAURUS

Day Tour in Corinth Canal, Mycenae, Nafplion & Epidaurus (10 hours)

Argolis private tour starts from Athens ( Your Hotel/ Apartment) (request another departure terminal, as Nafplion) and drives westwards along the scenic coast , through the ancient areas of Elefsis and Megara until we reach the Corinth canal with its breathtaking views (short stop / on the bridge, which is the highest point of the canal -80 meters high and 6 km long- which connects the Aegean Sea to the Ionian Sea (short stop). Our private tour drives through a scenic coastal road with views from Saronic Gulf to Epidaurus, the greatest healing center of Asclepious in classical times  and the theater ( 4th century B.C. ) one of the most perfect and the best preserved of the ancient Greek theaters.

The emperor Nero was the first to attempt to construct the canal, personally breaking the ground with a pick-axe and removing the first basket-load of soil in 67 CE, but the project was abandoned when he died shortly afterwards. The Roman workforce, consisting of 6,000 Jewish prisoners of war, started digging 40–50-metre-wide (130–160 ft) trenches from both sides, while a third group at the ridge drilled deep shafts for probing the quality of the rock (which were reused in 1881 for the same purpose). According to Suetonius, the canal was dug to a distance of four stadia (approximately 700 meters (2,300 ft); about a tenth of the total distance across the isthmus). A memorial of the attempt in the form of a relief of Hercules was left by Nero's workers and can still be seen in the canal cutting today. Other than this, as the modern canal follows the same course as Nero's, no remains have survived.

The Venetians also considered it in 1687 after their conquest of the Peloponnese but likewise did not initiate a project.

Private tour to Epidaurus

Argolis Tour in Peloponnese drives in the hinterland of Epidaurus/ Epidavros to visit the sanctuary of Asklepios, the most brilliant centre of healing in the ancient world and the theatre ( 4th century B.C. ) one of the most perfect and the best preserved of the ancient Greek theaters.

In Summer time ( from end of June to end of August) there are performances.

Continue for Nafplion (first capital city of Greece in modern time - time for shopping if you wish) through the fertile plain of Argolis, the picturesque town nestling at the foot of a cliff crowned by the mighty ramparts of the Palamidi Fortress. Nafplion has 20,000 inhabitants and is divided into the old and the new town. The old town was built mainly in the days of the governor Ioannis Capodistrias, at the beginning of the 19th c, but buildings still exist from the Venetian era.

Argolis tour drives to Mycenae, the Homeric city of the Atreides, the city " rich in gold " of the ancient poets. Visit the Lions Gate, the Cyclopean Walls, the famous Royal Tombs of King Agamemnon e.t.c. Mycenae is the region’s most famous site, its name linked with some of the most memorable myths of Greek epic poetry and tragedy. Of particular significance is its location–on a steep hill within sight of the fertile plain of Argos and the gulf of Nafplion, protected at the rear by two mountains and deep valleys. blocks. Return to Athens  at evening
