Sparta is a city with along history and with a modern municipality. The Municipality of Sparta is the capital of the Laconia prefecture. With an excellent city plan Sparta stands on the side of the ancient city built by the decree of 1834 signed by King Otto and designed by Staufehrt. It is surrounded by ancient sites and the center of the city is crowned with many neoclassical buildings and monuments.
Cape Sounion is dominated by the spectacular Temple of Poseidon overlooking the Aegean sea. On the rocky peninsula that projects into the sea at the south-east tip of Attica, the Athenians built sanctuaries to their two most important deities: Poseidon and Athena. The temple of Poseidon, was built on the summit of the rock rises 60m above the sea, and is surrounded by stout walls.
Marathon Thermopylae tour starts from Athens in the morning (do not hesitate to request another terminal).
