Continue for Diakopto (we stop for a beach brake - swim). Take the rack railway, taking you through the gorge of Vouraikos to Kalavryta, a fantasy scenery that is not to be missed. Kalavryta is one of the martyred villages in Greece that were destroyed in the Second World war. We will visit the famous Monastery of Agia Lavra, as it is known well, from the Independence war at 1821. Overnight on slopes of Mount Helmos.
Day2: Early morning visit the school Museum, with a detailed description of the massacre from Nazi soldiers. Depart for Olympia through the Arcadian Mountains, one of the most unique roads in Greece. Olympia is located NW in Peloponnese (the cradle of the Olympic Games). Visit the Sanctuary of the Olympian Zeus, Gymnasium, Fidias workshop, Hera's temple, the famous Stadium and the Archaeological Museum, one of the best in Greece. Overnight in Olympia.
Day 3: Peloponnese tour departs for Pylos and Methoni. We will visit Nestor's Palace. The palace, widely identified with that of Mycenaean-era Pylos, was a two-story building with store rooms, workshops, baths, light wells, reception rooms and a sewage system. The site is the best preserved Mycenaean Greek palace discovered. Depart for Pylos and Navarino bay (Known for Navarino Naval battle at 1827) continue to Methoni. Visit the Castle a medieval fortification. A deep moat separates the castle from the land and communication was achieved by a wooden bridge.
Day 4: Peloponnese tour departs for Messinia. Hidden alongside the town of "Mavromati" translated means Black Eye, lies Ancient Messini which is 25 km from the major city of Kalamata. You may have heard of the famous Greek Kalamata olives which come from this region. As it is not well advertised very few tourist visit the ancient city. As we enter the ancient city we can see the Acardian gate ( a wall that circles the city which is still in a good shape).
After sightseeing we can enjoy a wonderful meal at cafe Ithomi, which is owned by Niko Kountouris. From his external veranda which sits high above the ruins you obtain a full view of the ancient city whilst enjoying a cold beer of a glass of local wine. Next we drive to Kalamata and we will take a unique scenic coastal road to Mani... Mani is an open Museum, with the tower houses and the unique morphology which combines Mountains and Sea. Drive on to Areopolis a large village (with taverns) in the typical Maniot style, tower houses and churches.
Day 5: Visit the famous Caves of Diros (99% in beauty scale). If you like Medieval settlements we recommend to stay an extra day as we'll have the chance to visit Cape Tenaron and Poseidon Death Oracle. Leave the area of Mani to Gythion.
It was the seaport of Sparta. Gytheio used to be an important port until it was destroyed in 4th century AD. Today it is the largest and most important town in Mani. ( Short stop for Photos ) Continue for Monemvasia a name which derives from moni emvasis, the Greek for "single entrance", is a truncated mass of rock attached, tentatively, to the eastern coast of Laconia by a slender modern causeway. A true island known as the "Gibraltar of Greece", Monemvasia was settled in the sixth century AD. by Lacedaemonians fleeing Sparta.
Day 6: Peloponnese tour visits Sparti/Sparta. Following a unique road which passes, through gorges, rivers, tunnels, plane trees, cypresses, olive trees, mulberries and orange trees we reach Mystras. On the naturally defended hill of Myzithras the ruler of the Frankish Principate of Achaia Guillaume de Villehardouin built in 1249 a strong medieval castle the "Oriokastro" which was to play an important role in the history of the last centuries of the Byzantine empire. Next we visit the Acropolis of Sparta, which is open to travelers...After Lunch near Ancient Sparta, we drive to Nafplion (overnight)...
Day 7: Peloponnese tour drives in the hinterland of Epidavros to visit the sanctuary of Asklepios, the most brilliant center of healing in the ancient world and the theater ( 4th century B.C. ) one of the most perfect and the best preserved of the ancient Greek theaters. Visit Mycenae, the Homeric city of the Atreides, the city " rich in gold " of the ancient poets. Visit the Lions Gate, the Cyclopean Walls, the famous Royal Tombs of King Agamemnon. Return to Nafplion, to enjoy a swim in the crystal waters under the castle, or explore the Acronafplia castle...
Day 8: Peloponnese tour returns to Athens via Nemea (41 km. from Corinth) is close to the limits of the state of Argolida. This municipality is surrounded by an abundance of grapevines, which have given Nemea fame for the good wine they produce. Even in ancient times Nemea was renowned as being the place in Greek Mythology where Hercules killed the fearful lion.
Continue for Ancient Corinth. It was from one of the richest cities and this is quite evident by its remains, including the huge Agora (market place) and Apollo's Temple (6th c . B .C.) Next we reach the Corinth canal with its breathtaking views (short stop / on the bridge, which is the highest point of the canal -80 meters high and 6 kms long- which connects the Aegean Sea to the Ionian Sea (short stop).
Our Peloponnese tour with 8 / 9 overnights, give us the the chance to visit all the sites, all year around (4 seasons) as travelers and succeed to avoid the large buses tourist groups' usual hours. Our photos are a testament to this...
