What does Greece mean ?
Many scientists
believe that the name HELLAS derived from “sol” which means “light”. Derivative words are
“selini ” “sellas”. So from the word
Sellas came the word Ellinas and Ellas. In antiquity all the
people who spoke the same language, believed in the twelve
gods and had the same ideals, could be called Ellines
Aristotle the philosopher stated that in Epirus the
inhabitants, the Selloi, then named Grekoi and now
Greeks. The name Grekoi according to Aristotle was older
than the word Ellinas.
This word
predominated throughout the world especially during the
Byzantine period. The Byzantine (then dedicated Christians)
avoided using the word Ellinas because they identified it with
worship (idolatry) and
they called them Graikoi (GREEKS-GREECE). So from the
Byzantine this term was established.
